Provenance, a lab knowledge explorer: your questions answered

What is Lab Knowledge Explorer?

Lab Knowledge Explorer is an AI-powered knowledge retrieval system built for scientific organizations. It helps researchers find and organize information buried across lab notebooks, meeting notes, presentation decks, experimental reports, and other scientific documents.Instead of searching through dozens or hundreds of files manually, researchers can ask about a construct, experiment, assay, vector, project, or scientific topic and quickly find the relevant evidence.?

What can I ask it?

ou can ask questions the way a scientist naturally thinks about a project.

For example:

  • Where has this construct been discussed?
  • Which experiments involved this vector?
  • What assay results mention this construct?
  • What observations or concerns were documented?
  • Which researchers worked on this project?
  • How has the discussion around this construct evolved over time?

The system organizes the relevant information and presents the underlying source excerpts so researchers can see the evidence behind the answer.

‍

How is this different from searching our shared drive?

Traditional document search finds files. Lab Knowledge Explorer finds scientific evidence.

A keyword search may tell you which documents contain a particular phrase. Lab Knowledge Explorer goes further by recognizing scientific entities such as constructs, vectors, assays, experiments, and projects, and connecting related information across different documents.

This makes it possible to follow the story of a construct or experiment across meeting notes, presentations, notebooks, and reports — even when the information is spread across many files.

‍

Can we trust the answers?

Lab Knowledge Explorer is designed for evidence discovery, not unsupported scientific conclusions.

Every retrieved result is connected to its source, allowing researchers to review the original document and relevant excerpts. The system can organize evidence and surface explicitly documented decisions or observations, but it does not attempt to invent scientific conclusions or reconstruct decisions that were never recorded.

That means researchers can move quickly without losing the ability to verify what was actually documented.

‍

What are you building first?

We will start by building a Scientific Wiki — a structured, searchable home for an organization’s scientific knowledge.

The Wiki will bring together key information about constructs, experiments, assays, vectors, projects, researchers, and other scientific concepts in one place. It will provide a foundation for organizing knowledge that is currently scattered across lab notebooks, reports, presentations, meeting notes, and other documents.

From there, Lab Knowledge Explorer will make that knowledge discoverable. Researchers will be able to search across the Wiki and underlying source documents, follow connections between scientific entities, and retrieve the evidence behind what they find.

The goal is to create a system that first organizes scientific knowledge, and then makes that knowledge easy to explore, connect, and retrieve.

‍

Who is Lab Knowledge Explorer for?

Any scientific organization where important knowledge is distributed across documents can benefit from it.

It is particularly suited to:

  • Academic research labs managing years of experiments, notebooks, and publications
  • Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies working across complex research programs
  • Molecular diagnostics laboratories where assay development, validation, and experimental history need to remain accessible
  • Translational research teams connecting discoveries across projects and experimental stages

It is especially valuable when scientific knowledge accumulates faster than people can realistically keep track of it.

‍

What does it help researchers do?

Lab Knowledge Explorer turns scattered documentation into a searchable scientific knowledge base.

Researchers can spend less time hunting through folders and documents and more time understanding what has already been done, what has been observed, and where the relevant evidence can be found.

By bringing together discussions, experiments, assay results, researchers, and documents around the scientific entities that matter, Lab Knowledge Explorer helps organizations preserve institutional knowledge and make it easier to discover.
